Can I please come in? ...a.k.a. Name that story!!? - clever invitation titles

I'm trying to understand the book / story of the film, in which a character type, something of a mythical demon or spirit, the houses of people try. However, you can only enter if invited to the house, then they must find the means by which intelligent enough to deserve an invitation.

Has anyone any idea what my story? I know that much about the story, but the rest escapes me, but the way I read / saw that .... someone please help me!
